After decades of caring for everyone else, it’s time to give some of that love back to yourself. These self-love poems over 50 celebrate your strength, your wisdom, and the beautiful truth that your best days are still ahead. Read one each morning, tape one to your mirror, or share one with a friend who needs a reminder of how wonderful she is.
1. The Woman in the Mirror
For the days you need to see yourself kindly.
The woman in the mirror now
has lines I didn’t know,
but she has weathered every storm
and still found ways to grow.
So I will smile at her today
and tell her she did well,
for there is more to love in her
than any glass can tell.
2. Enough
For anyone who spent years trying to earn their worth.
I spent so many years believing
I had to earn my place,
to prove my worth by doing more
at an exhausting pace.
But now I know, at sixty-five,
a truth I wish I’d known:
I’m worthy just because I am,
and I am not alone.
3. My Own Valentine
For celebrating yourself, no partner required.
This year I bought myself the roses
and poured the finest tea,
I wrote a card in my own hand:
“With love, from me to me.”
I lit a candle, played my song,
the one I love to hear,
and danced alone around the room
to celebrate the year.
4. Aging Joyfully
For those who refuse to sit still.
They told me to age gracefully,
to sit and fold my hands,
but I have joy still left to spend
and quite a few more plans.
So I’ll age joyfully instead,
with paint and song and dance,
and every morning that I wake,
I’ll give my life a chance.
5. Gentle With Myself
For a tired heart that deserves rest.
Today I will be gentle with
the heart that’s carried me
through loss and love and laundry piles
and all that had to be.
I’ll give myself the tender care
I’ve given all the rest,
and let my weary heart lie down
and know that it is blessed.
6. Still Becoming
For a birthday, or any day you need hope.
I am not finished, not yet done,
I’m still becoming who
I always was meant to be,
with so much left to do.
So write it on my birthday card
in letters bold and bright:
the best of me is still ahead
and shining with its light.
